Joan Scheckel

3 Day Lab

Chapter 2:                 Transformative Journey

March 13 - 15 | Los Angeles

  • What:

This in-depth workshop focuses on the Transformative Journey: Crafting Character Arc. The Technique thinks of episodic and screenplay structure as a roller coaster ride through a truth. No story moves in a predictable straight line, it has rises and falls and loop de loops….unexplained stops and diversions, and where it ends up, might just be somewhere you never expected. So how do you craft this arc? What makes the structure true to YOU? Whether you are Directing, Writing, Acting, or Producing, this lab will show you what’s beyond the Hero’s Journey.

• Delve deep into the building blocks of Journey
• Discover how Overall Action, Beats and Relationship combine to create a visceral structure
• Learn how to define the 5 key scenes essential to your protagonist's Journey
• Think outside the “Hero’s Journey” box
  • When:

    Friday 3/13 - Sunday 3/15

    • Friday 3/13 7pm - 10:30pm
    • Saturday 3/14 12pm - 6pm

Body Lab

Tuesdays 4:00pm &             Fridays 4:30pm                        Los Angeles

  • What:

Joan joins forces with her own Master Teacher, Rie Katagiri (movement coach for Marisa Tomei in The Wrestler, Juno Temple in Afternoon Delight), to create a Body Lab for Artists.

Using yoga, qi gong, intuitive movement and ball therapy, Rie’s work reinforces your ability to be fully present and authentically connected to your body. This movement study works in tandem with The Technique to explore how the body is intrinsic to self expression.

FEEL THIS

curated by Chivas Clem

Saturday, February 28
THE
HOLLYWOOD WALK OF ART 11am-6pm
Reception 6-8pm @The Space

FEEL THIS is Joan Scheckel’s first solo show of photographs, curated by Chivas Clem.

The photos were born out of her collaboration with actors, directors, cinematographers, and artists as she developed and refined “The Technique” - her revolutionary method of achieving maximum artistic agency through accessing pure unmediated feeling. Scheckel’s photographs serve as a record of the birth of this new method as her subjects are tasked with reaching sustained heights of pure feeling. In this moment her subjects reach an emotional critical mass in which the veil is lifted on the inner life. These feelings, exposed without context, also have the effect of creating an index of mysterious narratives that are never resolved.

FEEL THIS is a visual manifesto of Scheckel's shepherding a new movement of authentic filmmaking - the central tenet of which is that storytelling derives from universal truths that reside within each individual. The photographs capture moments of dramatic urgency, the slippery place between the self and its performance as it happen under the lens.
