Joan Scheckel Filmmaking Labs - News Letter - Winter 2016

Happy 2016! Let's start the New Year with Feeling! This Winter, for the first time ever, JSFL is rolling out 3 brand new Chapters of The Lab Series: Feeling, Blocking and Case Studies. If you're looking for a way to ground into your work and turbocharge your craft, come! We start this very weekend with Feeling: a don't miss workshop that introduces the core tools of Feeling that are key to The Technique. And now, a word about Feeling. Are you still reading? Usually, when the F word comes up, we Flee instead of Feel. So for many years, I camouflaged the word behind the sexier concepts of Action. But oh, how times have changed! Now we can speak freely! The feminine, the felt are coming out! The fuel, the power, the potency and the heart of art comes from our deep well of Feelings. Story structure evolves from our Feelings, from our desire to derive meaning and share it with others. As the Consulting Producer on the Emmy and Globe Award winningTransparent, I feel honored to put The Technique so fully into play with Jill, the writers, guest directors, cast, DP, and crew! This month, JSFL celebrates how our whole Amazon and Trans Family uses The Technique's Feeling Tools because I want to incite you and inspire you to dive in and tell your story in a felt, unmediated way. The JSFL Lab Series teaches you how to Do The Feeling: how to access your story, how to feel it, write it, act it, block it and shoot it. So take one Chapter, take them all, in any order you like!

The work we are doing is changing the game. Come join us this Winter for new Labs, inspiring events, and the catalyzing presence of like minded artists. Sign up now for your next Winter 3 Day Lab and be a part of the JSFL Community revolutionizing storytelling!

JILL SOLOWAY

Emmy Award Winning Creator / Director of Transparent

“When Jim is shooting, he’s doing a specific technique we learned at Joan’s, where the camera is emotional. He is playing a playable action – just like the actors. And when I adjust an actor’s action, it’s always [with a] feeling verb about what the character is doing to get what he or she wants. I will make those same adjustments with Jim. I’ll shift his action and that will transmit unconsciously into the camera movement.”

JEFFREY TAMBOR

Emmy Award Winner for Outstanding Lead Actor

“I treasure Joan and her instruction is in every step, she is an intuitive genius.”

JIM FROHNA

Director of Photography

“Jill asked me to join her and the cast at rehearsals with indie filmmaking guru and consulting producer Joan Scheckel. The time spent was not about running scenes, but about exploring character, relationship and emotion - all with music and through movement... I was participating as fully as the actors were. That’s a treasure for a DP.

And it was fantastic.”

JAY DUPLASS

Critic's Choice Award Nominee for Best Supporting Actor

“We work with Joan Scheckel [Consulting Producer] and one of the ways that she gets into character and backstory — without coming at us with a bunch of “intellectual” ideas,  is by putting us in a room together for two days...we have these physical and emotional interactions... what we get done feels like more than if Jill  had written a novel about us.”

JUDITH LIGHT

Golden Globe Nominee for Best Supporting Actress

“All of us on the team worked with Joan Scheckel on the emotional connections we all had as a family which is why it feels so much like family when you watch the show. Something happened to me during this process where I felt Shelly come through me. It wasn't a lot of intellectual work... it was experiential and about connection with the other people. She just began to come through me as we did Joan Scheckel's work.”

"Joan gave me a Technique, she handed me a map with clear markings that made sense… Although I had been writing TV for many years and went to film school in college, I had no actual technique. I had a shot list and a hope for the best, but I didn’t have something to do when I got to the set...I came into most of my power as a filmmaker when I realized that all I needed to do was make a safe space for people to have feelings."
